Emma "Four Leaf" Roth is the only child of legendary racer Nikolai Roth. Her nickname and call sign, plus the media's name for her, is Four Leaf because after every race that he won Nik would throw her in the air and call her his four-leaf clover.
She gained inter-galactical fame along with him because of it, and when she was 14 she became his mechanic. Equally talented as him, and was renowned to set up the best car that nobody else could figure out how she did, he wanted her to follow in his footsteps. The media were anticipating it.
Nikoli was close friends with William Adama of the military fleet, so much so that he considered naming him his daughter's godfather until he ridiculed the religious notion. Plus joked that with Adama's career, it was far more likely Adama'd die before him. Emma called Adama "Uncle Bill" and as she grew beyond the parental-adoration stages of childhood and into her teens, she began to become closer with him than her own father. He taught her how to fight, and shoot.
When she became of age she entered the world of racing herself. She was extremely promising. Adama attended every one he could, though it was very hard for him to do so. Then a controversy with people in general and her rivals claiming she was only winning because of her father's favouritism, illegal parts were planted on her ship, fights were picked. She abruptly pulled out before it could escalate, she knew how these things ended.
Her father was not pleased and called her a coward. He himself had been retired by a spectacular crash that almost killed him. It was Adama who had held her hand in the hospital. This was also part of her reason for pulling out of the sport.
Having fallen out with her father and the media and fellow drivers evil-eyeing anything she'd have to do with the sport, she happily backed away entirely. In her twenties and free to do anything she wanted, she went roaming for a few months, learned to gamble, hooked up, did her own thing. Then she came back to develop her own race-ship but sold the company out when the initial establishment was done.
Her team was beginning to reach the top ten and her face was seen again with the sport, albeit from a cockpit distance. Her father sought to reconcile with her and after years of absence was planning a comeback. He wanted her back as his mechanic too, maybe even his team-mate, the dynamic duo together again. She declined and he couldn't understand her expulsion of the sport, their rocky relationship was better than it had been in the last 5 years and the media picked up on the rumours of it, but what she never told anybody was that her father's last words to her had been "Go run off to your Uncle Bill then, wherever the hell he is now!"
When the Cylons invaded, Emma was off-planet on a business meeting her father should have been attending too, but he was practising for his upcoming surprise return to racing. If he hadn't been he would have survived, which she uses as her reasoning for never setting foot in the cockpit of a ship again.
She was presumed dead by the media and public along with the billion others of the human race and she was happy to keep it that way. She mourned her father and sobbed for weeks, her friends and home and planet... everybody. She kept herself to herself, maintained her music collection, helped a few lost citizens here and there, kept herself to herself.
She had barely seen Adama since she was 16, the last time being for a brief moment at her third race, so she had no reason to approach him. But when Galactica was in a crisis of being low on men and the last crisis had only just been averted by the breadth of a hair, she knew she could help and could no longer deny the fact that they needed her help.
When she was announced aboard the Galactica, Adama was astounded. He had to repeat her name and greeted her fondly when he saw her for the first time. He held himself back for officiality's sake. Lee also remembered her from their childhoods and her racing career. Emma stated her wish to aid them only as a mechanic and asked that they kept her survival to themselves, she didn't want the attention of the press if she could help it. They of course agreed and she moved into the mechanic's quarters. Everybody was a little starstruck but mostly held their fanatics back, and were amazed when she applied her ingenious mechanical skills to their ships. Chief and some others even felt a little threatened, but were mostly impressed and she proved amiable enough.
Her secret to her legendary mechanical skills was of course that she kept them as manual as possible. All the automated software and security had made the racers lazy and safe, with the Roth's methods every move they made was raw instinct and knowledge. They won. This knowledge made her extremely useful in every technological aspect of the Galactica, not just the ships.
She aided Starbuck with the captured Cylon Raider and her close revolutionary work on the Vipers caused her to also become familiar with Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama.
When the election for a new Vice President came she met up with Lee and Starbuck on the luscious Cloud 9. They were surprised to see her but she explained with her celebrity status she could help them out, humorously offering to make any distractions, and wanted to do everything she could to support the President and keep the terrorist out of any position of power. She had personal beef with Tom Zarek as he'd tried to ruin her father because of his governmental support back in the day.
When Gaius Baltar was nominated as Vice President she was voted to take his place on the board as Caprica representative.
She hid out with Lee even more to get away from the press and as their friendly banter, easy humour, common backgrounds and old memories began to come to the surface she realised she was beginning to like him.
Colonial Day arrived, Gaius had won, and the party was underway. Emma was turning down offers left and right as her survival had become public and hid out around the walls. Adama spotted her and thanked her for all she had done. He tentatively brought up the subject of knowing her as a child and she acted like she kind of remembered. He said with a smile that her father would have been appalled that his little Four Leaf was forced to dance with the walls on a day like today, and offered her to dance. She accepted and was far more pleased to be in his company than she let on. At the end she thanked him for saving him. But she said it so much more sincerely than was required for a dance, she meant so much more than for that night. Lee then came up to her as he'd been looking for her all night. He asked her to dance and she happily accepted, they were friends but she was beginning to feel much more for him.
A critical event requiring every single pilot, of which they were very low on, caused her to come out of hiding per se and don the name Four Leaf once more, entering the cockpit for the first time in X years. Her heroics caused headlines like "Four Leaf Returns" "Our Four Leaf Clover" and "Return of The Roth"
When Adama was shot Emma was distraught, Lee was on parole so she saw it almost as her duty to take his place by his father's bedside. And Adama was the last thing she had to a father.
She avoided Colonel Tigh's visits at all costs. She spoke to the unconscious Adama as the doctors had told her it helped with her father. Whether it helped the patient or the visitor she didn't know, but either way it was doing some good, so she talked.
She addressed him as "Uncle Bill", her name for him as a child which she presumed he thought she had forgotten. She recollected all their times together, apologised for not coming to him when she survived the Cylon attack. She told him about everything that had happened to her since she last saw him, Doctor Cottle grew to have quite a fondness of her from overhearing her conversations with the unconscious Adama.
He came to when she admitted her father's last words to him. How he'd yelled to her to go join her frakking Uncle Bill when she refused to take part in his far-fetched dramatic come-back and instead headed to the surprise appearance at Adama's retirement party that they had both been supposed to be doing. And how the last thing she heard of him was that he had practically disowned her, written her out of all future profits of the Roth team. He was conscious for a while but instead stayed still while she spoke, and when she shed tears aroused, reached out for her hand and weakly but fondly said her name.
Later he called her to his quarters and when she addressed him as Commander he asked her not to call him that, not in private at least. She asked "Sir?" with a cocked head and he smiled to himself, then said "Uncle Bill" would do nicely/be fine/? She
The rescue mission of the survivors on Caprica. Four Leaf went with Starbuck, the friends that they had become, and she saw a familiar face amongst the row of survivors. A face she was simultaneously overjoyed and horrified to see. Nikolai Roth. Making another dramatic comeback, just when she thought she had gotten over him and sorted out her life, found something for herself, again.
Starbuck noticed too but she begged her not to say anything. Her cover was blown however when they were getting back into the Raiders and somebody called out her call name, causing her father to perk up, repeat the name and see Emma. She awkwardly returned his affections and let herself be happy in it for the moment, but insisted on taking the ride back with Starbuck, which Starbuck also insisted upon after a pleading glance from Emma.
When they returned to Galactica, Emma was the second to be embraced by Adama but he noticed her tense body and then Nikoli came out of his Raider. The shocked murmurs turned to cheers amongst the crowd and Emma stayed tight-lipped next to Adama, then the Cylon was discovered.
At the first opportunity she ?
